The Kindness Canteen
The Kindness Canteen is a unique and impactful program under the Job Skills & Development Program at the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita. It provides meaningful employment opportunities for adults with special needs, while they build essential, real-world job skills in a supportive environment. Kindness Reps are actively involved in preparing and cooking food, gaining hands-on experience in safe food handling practices and applying them in real time.
In addition to culinary skills, Kindness Reps also develop and practice customer service techniques, interacting with patrons and enhancing their communication abilities. With the guidance of coaches and the support of their peers, participants train and work together, building confidence, teamwork, and independence as they grow both personally and professionally.
Skills In Action (SIA) Space
The Skills in Action (SIA) space is a hands-on training environment within the Job Skills & Development Program at the Down Syndrome Society of Wichita, designed to help adults with Down syndrome develop practical banqueting and hospitality skills. In this dedicated space, participants learn key tasks such as event setup and tear down, ironing linens, and other essential hospitality duties.
These skills are not only taught but actively practiced during real events and activities, giving individuals the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in real time. By working in a live event setting, participants gain valuable experience, build confidence, and enhance their readiness for employment in the hospitality industry, all while being supported by coaches and peers.
